How to Create a Blog Content Strategy

Decide on your 3-5 topics

When you’re working to create your content strategy, first you are going to need to decide which topics you will be continually posting about. For me, my three topics are blogging, social media, and business tips so it is not extremely limiting for me but I am also not blogging about everything under the sun.

Pick a method to plan (aka your editorial calendar)

You might be a pen and paper girl or a digtal girl, so choose whatever planning method that works best for you. It could be a paper planner, a Google spreadsheet, or a project management app like Asana or Trello – it’s your choice of whatever method works best for you.

Personally, I use a combination of Trello and Google Sheets to keep track of my editorial calendar for my blog, email list, and the like.

Start brain dumping

The way that I usually get the best ideas is by taking 10-15 minutes and brain dumping every relevant topic that comes into my mind into a checklist on Trello. This gives me a lot of different topics to choose from so that I can start organizing them better.

Organize your ideas

Once you’ve completed your brain dump, then I recommend organizing your ideas into different categories so that when you’re planning your editorial calendar you can easily find your aforementioned topics.

Start planning

I plan quarterly so I will plan out my content three months at a time. This helps so I always know what I am going to be writing about in advance and can switch around topics as needed.

I only post blog content here on Tuesdays so I typically have between 4-5 posts each month depending on how many Tuesdays fall in each given month. Since I have three topics, I will rotate them each week so that I’m not writing two blogging related posts back to back.

Get to writing

Once you’ve planned out your content, whether you decide to do quarterly or even monthly, you need to get a head start on writing so that you can produce quality content without feeling overwhelmed. I like to batch my content so that I can get multiple blog posts done in one sitting so I am not scrambling to write content the night before it’s being posted.

There you have it, a quick and easy blog content strategy that will help you have a better workflow and process when you are creating your blog content each time.
